วันจักรีคือวันที่ระลึกถึงการขึ้นเถลิงถวัลยราชสมบัติเป็นปฐมบรมกษัตริย์แห่งพระบรมราชจักรีวงศ์ ของพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช ซึ่งตรงกับวันที่ 6 เมษายนของทุกปี

          พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช เมื่อครั้งยังทรงดำรงตำแหน่งเป็นสมเด็จเจ้าพระยามหากษัตริย์ศึก ทรงยกทัพกลับจากเขมร เพื่อเข้าปราบปรามการจลาจลในกรุงธนบุรี ภายหลังบ้านเมืองสงบ มุขอำมาตย์ราชมนตรีและราษฎรจึงพร้อมใจอัญเชิญสมเด็จเจ้าพระยามหากษัตริย์ศึกขึ้นเถลิงถวัลยราชสมบัติเป็นพระมหากษัตริย์ เมื่อวันที่ 6 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2325

          พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราชทรงทำนุบำรุงบ้านเมืองให้เจริญรุ่งเรืองเหมือนเมื่อครั้งบ้านเมืองสงบ พระราชภารกิจที่สำคัญคือการสร้างพระนคร ป้อม ปราสาทราชมณเฑียร วัดวาอาราม และพระราชทานนามพระนครที่สร้างใหม่นี้ว่า “กรุงเทพมหานคร บวรรัตนโกสินทร์ มหินทรายุทธยา มหาดิลกภพ นพรัตนราชธานีบูรีรมย์ อุดมราชนิเวศน์มหาสถาน อมรพิมานอวตารสถิต สักกะทัตติยวิษณุกรรมประสิทธิ์”

          Chakri Memorial Day commemorates the ascension to the throne of King Rama I (King Phutthayodfa Chulalok the Great), the first monarch of the Chakri Dynasty, which falls on April 6th of every year.

          King Rama I, while still holding the title of Somdet Chao Phraya Maha Kasat Suek, returned from Cambodia with his army to quell the rebellion in Thonburi. After peace was restored, the royal ministers and the people unanimously invited him to ascend the throne as King on April 6, 1782.

          King Rama I nurtured and developed the country, restoring it to its former glory. His most important royal duties included the construction of the new capital city, forts, palaces and temples. He bestowed upon this newly built city the name “Krung Thep Mahanakhon Bowon Rattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Nopparat Ratchathani Burirom Udom Ratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Phiman Awatara Sathit Sakka Thattiya Wisnukarm Prasit”.
